single license installed on dual processor
I currently have a single proc server in production and want to maintain a spare server that is dual-proc.
Is there a technical problem installing a single license SQL 2000 Standard on a dual-proc server? WIll it allow it or is it actually just a legal licensing requirement?

What's your license model? If you have per proc model, then you needs two licenses to run it on dual-proc server unless you restrict sql on one specific proc. If you have per seat license, then should be ok as long as you keep same number of seats.

we have a proc license.
so you are confirming that we can configure it to only use one. tnx

The licensing is based off of how many procs the OS is using, not how many SQL Server is using. You would have to completely partition off the other proc from the OS.
Do you have a single proc license for each server? Unless you have one set as a passive failover, you have to have separate licenses for each machine.
