Storing dropfield in edit

i have a drop field for staff and i would like to read this field and store the valu in a variable is there any chance that i can acheive this.

the reason i ask is that i want to setup a send email to the reciver automaticly.

You can use a query (the same query to get the drop box) in the SendMail module to send e-mail.
