xp_sendmail fails but alert system sends email notification.

I receive the following error when trying to invoke xp_sendmail 'xp_sendmail: failed with mail error 0x80070005'. However, for alert notifications the email works fine. SQL is using an alias account to send mail. This account doesn't have any funny characters. Any ideas why the alert system works but xp_sendmail does not? The invokation of xp_sendmail is being done by SA.

    Thanks.

Your sql agent service startup account may differ than sql server service's.

The SQL startup and agent accounts are the same. Since the accounts are the same I don't think that it has to do with the AD or exchange. If it did I think that it would not work either way.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Did you choose correct mail profile in sql server properties -> server settings tab?

    Hi,
We have several SQL servers conneting
to same Exchange , once in while we
get we get xp_sendmail error .

    I called microsoft few times,
    we tried to apply hotfixes.
At the end it was waist of time.

    you can try following
    1. xp_stopmail,
    2.xp_startmail
    3. use xp_sendmail to test it

in my case it worked 50% of the time
if error exist after step 3 , I
restart sql server service, it always
    correct problem

    Alex
