data management as part of the software life cycle

I chair a Working Group revising IEEE Std. 828 (software configuration management -- SCM). One area that has never been adequately discussed is the need to include data, schemas, rules, etc. in SCM planning and activities. Anyone out there have any experience in such?
    thanks,
    Chuck

I know the developers that support the application that my databases run on have that built into the SDLC for the program. Whenever new versions of the application that utilize a database come out the change in schema, rules, triggers, stored procedures, etc. are documented for the software.

Thanks for the info! Does the dev team use a SCM tool to capture the DB info? Would it be possible to connect me to someone in the team responsible for ScM?

Actually I am not sure what their main tool is for capturing all of that data. I believe it is Microsoft's Team Foundation Server.

I will see if I can get a hold of one of them to ask.
