So I'm doing some research on SQL programs - and I know basically nothing. I know some require payment and others allow the company to maintain the SQL itself. What kind of software and hardware would the company need and how much would it cost? Is there anything else they would need to keep the database running? Where can I find good information on this?

What kind of database system are you looking for? MS Access or big rdbms? Check web site of Microsoft, Oracle, IBM and Sybase for more info.

    Nature of the Application?

If it's something that's not too huge, MYSQL is also an option. But "smaller" editions of MSSQL Server are also a great way to ensure scalability if this application / project grows dramatically down the road ...

    Good Luck,
