How to decrease the size of data file ?

    Hello Guys,

Just wondering if someone can help me decrease the size of mdf and ldf files. In the past production database "NewUniverse" had been allocated space of 100 GB for mdf file and 8 GB of ldf file. However the data file has only used 30 GB of data. But now due to disk space related reason, I tried to decrease the datafile size from 100 GB to 40 GB. But I am not able to do it.

Any help in this regard would be appreciated.

You can write click on the database in Enterprise Manager and go to All Tasks - Shrink. Try to shrink data file and log file.

Thanks skhanal. I was able to shrink the data file by your way however i was not able to shrink the log file.

So I guess i will be changing the mode of database to simple and then do the shrink as suggested by someone here on the forum.

    Once again thnxs

Thanks rmiao. I resolved the problem by first backing up the database and then shrinking it.
