SQL2000, installing default instance after named instance

    Hi all,

Hopefully a simple question. Is it a problem (safe) to install the default instance after you installed a named instance? I have a server running only a named instance...

Should be ok althouhg people tend to install default instance first.

    SQL Server Instance

Just to test it I installed the Default instance on SQL server 2000 successfully. However when i tried to uninstall default instance it just removed all the SQL server components i.e. Management Tools like Enterprise Manager, SQL Profiler etc.

I uninstalled the default instance using Add or Remove program feature in Control Pannel. After removing the default instance I still see the other computer instance but not the Management tools.

Can someone help me out here. Also I would appreciate if someone can elaborate about the disadvantages of installing the 2nd instance on the server.

I guess you just did click click and click.

Just install only the client portion.

Did you chose named instance in SQL Server setup wizard to uninstall?. By default it uninstalls default instance. If you have more than one instance then you need to run it again.

Owais, you can install sql client tools again. To have multiple instances on single server, the server should be power enough to handle those instances.
