archive logs
I am using oracle 9i on windows 2003 server. It is in archive log mode. I have about 50GB database. I have had some issues where I need to restore and recover datafiles. The path to the archive logs is D:\oracle\oradata\dbname\archive. In that folder I have ~300 files that have names like 1_216.dbf or 1_267.dbf and each one is 100MB. This folder has filled the D drive. I moved some of the older files to another location to make room. However, when I need to do a restore and recover on a datafile I have to move these older files back to their original location on the D drive or the recovery bombs.
I am wondering if there is a way to make it so I only need say the last 10 dbf files to do the recovery. Is it something like a checkpoint or some other command that will let me do away with some of these 300+ 100MB a piece files?
I just can't figure out why it has to apply 300+ log files to recover the datafile.
Thanks

What is your backup/retention policy? It's a no-brainer.
