SQL Plus initial login help

Thanks for taking a minute to view the thread. I'm a new student learning on SQL Plus. I've installed Oracle 9i Lite without errors but unable to login into SQL Plus. I've tried searching numerous forums and resources on this issue, but end up getting more confused. From what I've gather, you can use system/manager or scott/tiger as the default login, but these are not working. The error I'm getting is

ORA-12560: TNS: protocol adapter error.

Can someone point me to the right direction on how to resolve this? Thanks.

i hate to say this but this can be one of the most frustrating errors in oracle to get and solve. it almost always requires the solver to be on the machine that it happens on to validate all the interactions within oracle.
this being said, i have seen this error most often come up from invalid network connections or a non-custom install of oracle. if you can validate your network (or be totaly off a network) and re-install without customizing, this might solve your problem.
