    Getting Started

I consider myself an access fan but want to branch out to learn more about databases. I like Microsoft SQL 2000 but I here Oracle is better. Anyway I am looking to get started and would like to know what I should do to get started learning about databases.

Better is a loaded word! It all depends what you want to use it for. For learning, something like MySQL is probably best as there are excellent online docs (www.mysql.com), a number of good books, an active community, and it's open source and free to use. PostgreSQL has slightly more features, though not as many users.

Oracle is generally regarded as the best database if you ignore cost, complexity and resources required!

To learn 'about databases' you first need to master SQL, and then go on to performance tuning, database design etc.
