Default values for drop list

Can anyone tell me how do set the default SELECTED value for a drop down during add using a customform template???

In Update and delete, the "selected" values are the current record pointer. For Add, there is no such thing. default values can be used for INPUT box and for a DropBox that uses a query to construct it's values. What is the "default" or "selected" value. There is no such thing. If you can specify a value. It would be on top of the "Drop list" in case they are not within the list.
