SQL Mail on SQL2000 (not domain account)

Hi:

There is a couple SQL2000 sp4 server, OS windows 2003 ent.
Still 2-3 months before migrate to SQL 2005, need SQL mail set up.

But they are just in the work group, not in any domain.
Do you think SQL Mail could be set up?
my impression is SQL Mail for SQL2000 must be domain account for the local machin admin group.
