I have decided to pursue a career involving databases, Oracle specifically. I am less interested in design and more interested in other certification(s) for working in databases. In my investigations, I have found so many different avenues of education, and I am wondering which avenue to pursue. Right now, I am concentrating on learning SQL so I at least have some knowledge before I start.

I would like to know what certifications you have pursued and why or why not you have found them useful. Perhaps you know of some sites or books I could use for aiding in my education? Please keep in mind that I am not interested in a 4-year school.
