    SQL Setup

    Hello!

I`m new to SQL Server, so excuse this if it`s a well-known
    problem with a well-known solution.

I tried setting up SQL Server 6.5 (the box but not the
docs or install claims it`s an
upgrade product) but the install hung at "Setup is now
installing the initial SQL Server configuration" for over
10 minutes. That is, the install kept processing
something but did not appear to be coming to an end until
I killed it. This happened repeatedly, and on a second
    server, too.

I then installed 6.0 (over 6.5!), and was able to install
6.5 over 6.0. However, I`m not able to install the 6.5
    docs.

SQL Server appears to run (although I`ve not tried any
    DB stuff).

Any suggestions? Should I uninstall and start over?

    best, paul

Paul, I have installed SQL 6.5 a few times (usually on 4-way servers) and it does take a while. ten minutes does not seem like too long of a time.

Since you have found something that works (except for the docs), I would uninstall and the reinstall 6.5, giving at leas thlaf an hour to be sure it did or did not fail. I don`t understand why you wouldn`t be able to install the documents now though.

Well..here`s the details. I uninstalled all and started over.

    1. Install of 6.0 went with no problem. Except I had SQL logon as
Local System Account since it would not accept the account/PW I
had setup for it. 6.0 can be started and stopped fine.

    2. Tried to Upgrade to 6.5 All went as before until the following
    two messages:

    -------------------------------------
    A. SQL Server Setup detected the following non-critical issues:

    Cannot connect to server

A detailed review of upgrade problems may be found in:

    D:SQL60INSTALLCHKUPG.OUT

To proceed with the upgrade, choose Resume

    (Later, CHKUPG.OUT was not found)
    -------------------------------------
    B. SQL Server Setup detected the following non-critical issues:

Setup could not connect to the SQL Server.
Setup could not connect to the SQL Server.

Box with "Exit to Windows NT" on it (which I clicked)
    ----------------------------------------

After this, I could not start MSSQLServer. Error 2140

An UPGRADE text file describing all upgrade activites
    concluded with "Upgrade Successful"
However, the installed SQL was 6.00.121

I uninstalled with the 6.0 CD, Rebooted, and re-installed
    6.0 (which appears to work)

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    best, paul
