Recovery from a damaged mdf file

    Hi,

Server drives become faulty and after the recovery of the server the SQL server installation was gone from the system drive. Residing on a different drive, the mdf and ldf files of a database were saved. Unfortunately, when trying to attach the files to a new SQL server installation there is a message 'I/O error (torn page) detected during read at offset 0000000000000000 in file E:\SQLServer2K\MSSQL\Data\db.mdf'.
The available backup files are not restorable returning 'An internal consistency error' upon restoring. So, the hope is with the mdf and ldf files. Does anyone have any idea what can be done specifically with the mdf/ldf files? Any recovery software to be recommended?

    Thanks!
    AV

    Build a similar database

    Hi,

Build up a new database with the same name, same data and log files name.
    Stop the SQL server service.
Overwrite the data and log files with your original files to the same location.
Restart the SQL server and you would find your original database.

Do post a reply if this procedure works.

    Cheers...

    Thanks Silver!

I tried your suggestion, but unfortunately it didn't help recover the database. The database appeard as 'Suspect' and 'No Items', and was not accessible.

Take look at kb article 828339 to see if it helps. May have to call Microsoft support.
