Performance problem because of Volume Leak in db.

I have recently come across a term called "Volume Leak" while reading about a problem of performance tuning. There was not much in the context that would hint the meaning. When I searched for the term, there was no standard description for it.
Can anyone help me with a standard definitive meaning of the term????
